What are ChatGPT ads?

A ChatGPT ad promotes a product or service at the bottom of ChatGPT’s answer. Advertisers pay for it, and ChatGPT labels it as sponsored.

OpenAI says ads don’t change what ChatGPT answers, and that ads always stay separate from the answer. It said so when it expanded ChatGPT ads to more countries, India among them.

Who sees ChatGPT ads in India?

ChatGPT shows ads to logged-in adults on its Free and Go plans. The Go plan costs ₹399 a month. People on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans don’t see ads.

OpenAI also keeps ads away from some conversations:

  • conversations about health, mental health or politics
  • Temporary Chats
  • users it believes are under 18

If you sell health or wellness products, ask OpenAI what this means for your ads before you spend.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost in India?

News reports put the minimum daily budget at ₹725. That’s about ₹22,000 a month. We’ll check this figure with OpenAI and update this article.

You pay per 1,000 impressions, or per click. A campaign aimed at sales still charges per click, not per sale.

We couldn’t find published rates for India, per impression or per click. Your daily budget sets the most you spend each day.

How to start ChatGPT ads for your brand

  1. Sign up for Ads Manager at ads.openai.com.
  2. Set your daily budget.
  3. Add OpenAI’s pixel to your website, so Ads Manager can count your sales. Ads Manager calls them conversions.
  4. Create your first campaign.
  5. Check your impressions, clicks, spend and sales in Ads Manager.

Large advertisers can also buy through OpenAI’s own ads team, or through big agency groups such as WPP and Omnicom.

Can advertisers see your chats?

No. OpenAI says advertisers can’t see people’s chats, chat history, memories or personal details. Advertisers get only totals for their own campaigns, such as impressions and clicks. OpenAI also says it doesn’t sell user data.

Do ChatGPT ads suit e-commerce brands?

They can, if you test them carefully. Here’s how we would start:

  • Start with a small budget. Learn what works before you spend more.
  • Send shoppers to your own website. The pixel can count sales only on your own website, not on Amazon or Flipkart.
  • Keep your other ads running. ChatGPT ads are new in India, so nobody has a long record with them yet. Your Amazon, Meta and Google ads still bring in most of your buyers.

Where we come in

We run ads for brands on Amazon, Flipkart, Meta, Google and the quick-commerce apps. We can run your ChatGPT ads too.

We’ll set up your Ads Manager account and the pixel on your website. Then we’ll plan your first campaigns and run them alongside your other ads. We start small, track what sells, and spend more only on what works. See our marketplace ads and Amazon Ads work, or tell us about your brand.
